As a trader of precious metals, I am required to provide information about the law surrounding the sale of precious metals and hallmarking.

In the UK, items under 7.78 grams for silver and 1 gram for gold do not legally require a hallmark. Any item over that weight should be sent for hallmarking.

This weight limit is per piece i.e. per earring not per pair, and where a pendant is simply hung on a chain and comes off easily, the weight limit applies separately to the pendant and does not include the combined weight with the chain.

The vast majority of the jewellery I make falls under the silver 7.78 grams weight limit and so legally does not require a hallmark.

As a silver trader I am registered with Sheffield Assay Office. Please have a watch of the video below provided by them for more information.
